Helen Keller.

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved” Helen Keller.

Helen Keller was born a healthy baby. At nineteen months, she fell into a harsh sickness leaving her both deaf and blind. She became such a difficult child to care for that her family began to consider sending her off to an institution, believing it would be the only solution. Instead, a doctor recommended her to see Anne Sullivan. She was the director of a more low key institution and had lived a childhood similar to Keller. They lived together, and one day a miraculous thing happened. Spelling out a word, just one word, made the world clear for Keller. From that point on, everything went uphill. She took everything hour by hour, day by day, and rapidly progressed to normality. Throughout all her struggles and recovering, she was able to stay strong.

“Soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired..”

We all go through terrible things that tear us down to the deepest core. We believe no one understands us and looks down upon us with isolation because there is something different about us. We become weak, vulnerable, scared, unmotivated; the world seems to have neither sounds nor visions. Everything is gray. Everything is meaningless.

We have hit the lowest of the low, lower than rock bottom.

We can’t relate to anyone or anything, but when someone reaches out for the better, everything changes. Someone takes a step and shows you there is still something out there and there are people who care, regardless of your past and present stance.

Granted, unlike Keller, this change of ourselves in relation to others will not, cannot, happen so suddenly. However, we can be greatly impacted by people around us. There can always be someone to stay by us, help us reach the place of semi-normality; help us get back on track. We are all born healthy, we are all faced with difficult struggles, we are all strung to believe there is only one answer. But there isn’t, there is an abundance of answers. Most of them are right in front of us.

“Soul be strengthened.. ambition inspired..”

We can be inspired by the little things. Spell out the word water with your finger in the air; a miracle may happen.
